Janet studied Maths and Astrophysics at university and gained a PhD in Astronomy, and enjoyed amateur astronomy all her life. Janet worked in the IT industry for 25 years, starting with coding and ending up in project management. The technological jumps which occurred during her working life were exciting and challenging. Janet started using a large mainframe computer at university which she fed cards into, to run programs, and ended up managing development of online customer service sites! In addition to a basic scientific understanding, one of the most important skills she needed was flexibility, to quickly adapt to changing technological and regulatory environments, providing customers with ever-increasingly sophisticated services. Janet had responsibility for managing the development of part of the infrastructure to support the launch of the National Lottery in 1994. In her spare time, Janet enjoys recording butterflies and moths, to assist in monitoring climate change, and badminton.
